Polimom Says

Conserving water the easy way

Five days ago, the Chronicle’s Katy blog let some of us out here in the hinterlands know that we should be voluntarily rationing our water:

The ill-effects of a dry season are trickling down to some Katy area residents.
A voluntary water conservation order is in effect for residents in Harris/Fort Bend County MUD #1 until further notice.
If dry conditions persist, the voluntary restriction could be changed to a mandatory water conservation order to address water supply concerns, according to water district officials. Watering may be restricted to certain days and times of the day.

Polimom laughed to read that, because as I was reading that post, I was listening to the gentle, soothing sounds of rain falling outside my window. It’s not quite so funny today:

As much as 10.5 inches of rain was reported by the heart of the morning commute today, said Rusty Cornelius, administrative coordinator for Harris County Emergency Management. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Houston and Galveston counties until 10 a.m.

The bad news is that I’m writing this to the calming background noise of rain, as the drops splash into the standing pond in my backyard.
There’s lots of good news, though. For instance, it could be much worse! (Remember Allison?)
More imortantly, though, we’ve stopped watering the yard. So I guess we’re conserving water after all, eh?
Happy Monday.

Update: Looks like the area’s not done with the deluge, either:

Some Houston-area locations could receive another 5 to 7 inches tonight, with higher totals in isolated areas. That could prove disastrous for some parts of an already-soaked city.
