Polimom Says

Webb's maybe maybe-not gun

The strange goings-on with the gun that may (or may not) be Sen. Jim Webb’s, and which may (or may not) have been given to an aide to hold because Webb may (or may not) have forgotten that he couldn’t carry it with him on a plane… (pause for breath)… keeps getting stranger:

Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) said Tuesday that he did not give staffer Phillip Thompson the pistol whose possession got the aide arrested Monday when he tried to enter the Russell Senate office building.

“I have never carried a gun in the Capitol complex and I did not give the weapon to Phillip Thompson, and that’s all that I think I’ll say,” Webb told reporters.

“I think this is one of those very unfortunate situations where, completely inadvertently, he took the weapon into the Senate yesterday,” Webb added. The senator noted that he was in New Orleans from Friday until Monday. He speculated that the incident happened because three of his cars were moved because of the trip.

Ah. Much clearer now, thanks.

Obviously, if it is Webb’s gun, then this incident has been blown out of proportion exponentially. Contrary to popular opinion, everybody affiliated with the Democrats (or liberals) is not anti-Second Amendment. From the Washington Post:

“I’m a strong supporter of the Second Amendment,” Webb added. “I have had a permit to carry a weapon in Virginia for a long time. . . . It’s important for me personally and a lot of people in the situation that I’m in to be able to defend myself and my family.”

Good for him.
So — is it his gun? Did he give it to the aide? Pretty fuzzy, all the way around — which is as it should be (for a change) with an ongoing investigation.
I doubt this would be nearly the story it seems to be if Webb wasn’t a Democrat, but since he is, everybody’s busily reading between the lines, working feverishly to fit the situation into the partisan box.
All must be right again with the world.
