Via yet another story about Obama, it turns out Chicago is vying to host the 2016 Olympics.
*snort*
And you thought there were protests this year?
The politicization of the Olympics is a disastrous, precedent-setting development… and if China responds as the protesters want, then the political genie will be completely out of the bottle and running free.
Maybe the IOC should just come up with a couple of permanent Games sites, in countries that nobody is upset with. Surely there’s someplace out there on the planet that hasn’t ticked off one group or another.
Let’s see…. where would that be?
Anybody?

I know that I do not want them in Houston for sure
The original site, Greece, was very nice — and appropriate, don’t you think?
The ideal of each of the countries participating in the Olympics being able to host same without demonstrations is, of course, unrealistic. Demonstrators do not march, carry placards, beat their drums, or shout and scream if no one is in the audience to record their efforts. In addition, some of the countries that participate are so poor that there is simply no way they could construct the facilities required.
What about this suggestion? Have them always held in Greece, with each participating country chipping in with the expenses pro rata?
Politicizing the Olympics is “precedent-setting”? Where has everyone been since, like, 1936!? Anybody else remember Jesse Owens vs. The Master Race?
As far as to “Where”, how about holding the Winter Olympics on Antarctica, and the Summer games… maybe on the island of Yap.

I’m going to say Iceland. No one dislikes them, and they’re going for a zero-carbon economy!
LOL @ John! I totally agree — we’re gridlocked already around these parts!
Patrick and Goldenrod hit both of the only two thoughts I had — Greece for the Summer Games and Reykjavík for the Winter.
Except drat and darn — there’re some folks unhappy with Greece, too…
Jeepers, EdT — had to go look up Yap to figure out where it was. LOL!!
Just think… they could add coin-flipping as an Olympic event!
