Update: Looks like re-entry for “Ordinary” residents will be Thursday. And more comprehensive info here.

Emails have been coming in since yesterday evening, and Twitter’s been alive with: “Can we come home now?”
Since the answer this morning seems to be, “No, not yet“, I expect that question to quickly morph into “Why can’t we come home now??”
And right behind that, it’ll be “We should have just stayed!”
So what do you think? Was Hurricane Gustav overhyped?
I suspect a lot of people are going to say yes, and that will factor into personal evacuation decisions when the next storm comes calling.

Adorable Child (AC) tells me that her good friend’s mom thinks they may not have to go to school tomorrow. Cuz there’s a hurricane out there. When I pointed out that said hurricane was hitting a different state altogether, and …
The worst-case scenario for New Orleans was never that it wouldn’t be “chocolate” enough, or that it would be too rich because all the poor would be forced out. It was that people would just give up.
I’m speechless: NEW ORLEANS – The Army Corps of Engineers, rushing to meet President Bush’s promise to protect New Orleans by the start of the 2006 hurricane season, installed defective flood-control pumps last year despite warnings from its own expert …
Living in the ‘burbs is hard for Polimom. The houses and neighborhoods look pretty much the same, the neighbors are so close you can hear them talking in their backyards, the restaurants are second-rate, and the main thoroughfares are lined …

I’m not second guessing, but Continental Airlines is really pissing me off. I have I flight scheduled for Friday – MSY-IAH-CMH. I am silver with Continental, and just called about my options – the main one being just to drop the MSY-IAH leg.
Their answer is that if the airport is open, I will have to treat this as a reschedule and fees may apply, even though the city hasn’t approved us to come back yet. I am in Shreveport right now and need to figure out by Thursday if I should drive back to New Orleans or Houston.
Well, now I’m really pissed – I just called Continental to find out how much it would cost to change my flight from MSY-IIAH-CMH to IAH-CMH. This is to stay on the same leg IAH-CMH that I am scheduled to fly on now. The change fee comes to $650 for me to drop the MSY-IAH leg. I am going to have to rethink my relationship with Continental airlines.
I’m thinking you should ask whether ignoring the first leg and just picking the flight up in Houston (w/ out formally requesting a change) would work. Cuz that’s just nuts.
As of Wednesday night, I was still contemplating my flight decisions. Based on Continental’s flight status (flights were shown to be going from about 8:00am Thursday) and the Nola.com info, I drove back to the New Orleans area Thursday just so I could make my flight Friday morning. I got in at 5:00 pm, my power was back on by 6:30. There almost seemed to be more airport staff than passengers. I was one of about 30 on a 737 to IAH.
