For weeks now, officials and agencies in New Orleans and Louisiana have been trying to eat an elephant. The problem is that theyâre all at different tables, some of which are in different restaurants altogether. Thereâs a FEMA table, a Blanco table, a Nagin table, a School Board table â all of which are seated by invitation only.
Not only that, but since nobodyâs ever eaten an elephant like this one before, they seem to be unsure which fork to use. Apparently they just want to talk about it for a while first. “Yep, Mayor, that’s a big elephant!” “Sure is, Gov! How do you think we should eat it?”
FEMA trailers canât go to properties that have no electricity, and electricity canât go on because the energy company has neither money nor enough workers, and workers canât be housed, and trailers for housing canât go to propertiesâ¦. Etc.etc.etc.
Not only are people going to âstarve to deathâ? waiting for the reconstruction meal to begin, the rest of the world has begun to lose interest in it. Louisiana â and NOLA â are running out of time.
There are no perfect solutions. Make some darned decisions and act on them â and do it together! Timeâs a-wasting, and support is waning. Everybody is losing patience.
Weâve âadmired the problemâ? way too long. Time to start eating that elephant – one bite at a time.

Folks, I’ve been a Saints fan forever – right back to before the depressing paper-bag Aint’s Days. We lavished love and (usually) forgiveness all over them, losing-season in and losing-season out. Even a good season (what year was that again?) …
(Yes, that’s a picture of my pumpkin!) When I was a kid, jack-o-lanterns were pretty vanilla. My mom and I would scoop the mucky innards out of the pumpkin onto thick newspapers, and then throw the mess away. Then we’d …
