I called to touch base with the firehouse about supplies, news, etc. Chief Holmes assures me that everything is fine. He informed me that Rep. Arnold is sending two truckloads of food trucks for distribution. They are delivering them to the Little Sisters of the Poor. That’s a good thing.
I asked him if he has any information about power. I understood him to say that the focus is on the “infrastructure”, bringing up the business and financial sections (like the CBD) first. I asked him about the power in Gretna, and he was not aware that they have power. Maybe they don’t? Hmmm.
Finally, I asked about the gunfire. He said he has not heard any (?), and that all the problems are on the East Bank. I gave him specifics (see previous posts), and he said he’d “pass the information along”. Once I got specific, he recalled “hearing something about it”. I strongly suggested he / they check in with Vinnie’s block.
So – this really is very interesting. Not sure what to make of it…..

There are rumors floating everywhere, of course, and it’s hard to confirm some of them, but these three subjects popped out at me. Power: I was told this morning that yes, some lights are on in Gretna (it can be …
Algiers is proving its mettle through one of the most wrenching, terrible events ever experienced in the United States. Its residents are resilient and devoted, and will no doubt have a central role in the rebuilding to come. For many …
This is really amazing. Truly astounding. In today’s Times-Picayune (print version), Page 2, left column… under the Parish Updates… for Orleans…. it says: “Algiers open; rest of parish closed.” You can view the image here: (You need the Adobe Reader.) …
So – here’s where we are right now about Algiers: I’ve spoken three times now with the Legislative Resource Center, who has been trying to work the issue with the authorities over on the West Bank. The answer is no. …
My dear,
I am Rebecca Stephenson, stuck in Alabama with my husband David Kern. We are from the 400 block of Elmira and cannot wait to track you down to give you a hug when we make it back. Without you we would have been desolate. We almost stayed and now wish that we had because we want to help. Feeling like there’s so much to do, so many to help and we’re just sitting here is driving us crazy.
We plan to be part of the Renaissance of New Orleans and are considering volunteering for the Red cross hoping to be sent to the Astrodome where at least we could be helping our own people. Another New Orleanian has done that and is keeping us up to date on where he’s being sent.
We are forever grateful for the information. The “backroads gas” idea is one we’d thought of. We’re glad to get a little confirmation of our idea.
Again, many thanks.
Hi! I’ve been triying to follow up all the information you are posting here. Thanks God I don’t have family there, but I still worry for so many people in such a situation. Could be me and my baby there suffering, I know the normal media sometimes( lets be nice) doesn’t say the whole story, so I read places like yours to have a better idea of what the people is really living. I’m praying for all of you, for all the confution to end and make the process of start again after the storm.
You metion something about “Vinnie’s block” and you have post other things with Vinnie on there. Sorry my ignorance and if I’m lost but could you direct me, so I can undartand better. I know you have more important things to do, so if you think there is no time for this, I understand. Keep the god job, you are helping a lot of people and that is great.
God bless you all.
Thanks so much for the info. We have a place just up from Vinnie on 905/07 Pelican we now work in Kuwait and it is so hard to get info. Is Jack still on the point? Mike Laird? CNN reported unconfirmed that oakwood mall was burned down. Is that true? I am just sick about what is happpening.
Hi Lisa,
I’m Kathy D’s brother. She is with Keely (sp?). This is second-hand from her but they evacuated before the storm and Jack stayed behind. I talked to her this AM and I believe Jack is still in AP. The reports from Jack (received by me second hand) have been pretty scary but he’s OK. Wish I had more to relay…Polimom, thanks for blogging this.
dd,
where is keylee? I’m her next door neighbor, Rob, and have been worried sick that she and Jack may have stayed. Now, I’m glad she got out, but am worried about Jack…
rob,
Keylee is at her Mother’s house. If you need the #, we’ll have to figure out a way to get it to you…
