I’m posting this mostly to the many who want to know when they can come home, if only to check the damage and grab some belongings (as they’ve said they’re going to allow for Jefferson Parish).
I have arranged a call tomorrow with officials, and I plan to at least ask the question. I will absolutely post anything I learn.
I have to confess, though, that I have doubts about even the Jeff. Parish return actually happening. There are something like 1 million refugees – and a pretty large percentage of those are from Jeff. That sounds pretty unmanageable (imho).
About the looting: yes, it is happening. Breaux Mart and CVS, I’m told, have been hit hard. Last night, looters were going up and down Kabel Drive, to and from those stores. They weren’t looting the houses, that I’ve heard.
Scary place all over… which is one reason why houses are only being looked at from the street for damage. Many are armed, and all are scared. So far, though, the all-out war zone we’re seeing on TV is NOT being repeated in Algiers.

Okay – some specific requests. Please keep in mind these observations are all from the street. People are getting pretty jumpy there now, and it is probably unwise to approach a stranger’s house. Re: Tout Suite – the building, at …
Dollar Bill goes back to Washington on a 16% turnout? Ah, NOLA…. what a shame. My rather long post on Jefferson’s win can be found here: The confounding re-election of William Jefferson Sigh…
Last night was the final debate between C. Ray Nagin and Mitch Landrieu, and after watching it (wwltv.com has it here), I finally figured out who I’d vote for if I were at the polls tomorrow in New Orleans. It …
I had a comment today on a post I wrote in January, telling me about recent shootings on the Point – including the officer that was shot today on Opelousas. A 25-year-old New Orleans police officer was undergoing surgery at …
This is really scary. I live right around the corner from Kabel, at MacArthur & Herald. Kabel, between MacArthur & DeGaulle, has gone down drastically in the last few years. I am so afraid that they will start looting the houses. I just pray that this doesnt happen
Hi guys! Thank you thank you! We are stuck in Alabama and WANT TO COME HOME to help. So much help will be needed in our beautiful New Orleans.
The city has been burned to the ground twice, and suffered a horrible hurricane in 1723. There were always hardy souls who stood their ground and rebuilt. We want to be among the newly evolved hardy souls who make New Orleans not just survive but thrive.
Sounds like Blade Runner or Road Warrior in some parts of NOLA.
Our house is 431 Elmira. Would be forever grateful if we could find out how we’re doing there. Someone earlier asked for someone to check on Phillip Mitchell and his wife Ceola. They are our next door neighbors and hadn’t boarded up when we left (which btw we are still regretting). There were also neighbors up the block, Moses and Nette who were staying. Can’t remember their address. Little peach house up from ours, across the street towards Alix. Would like to know they are okay.
We are planning on finding a way back to check on belongings while we figure out how to get our lives back in some fashion. We SOOOOOOO appreciate your information. Wish we were there so we could take pics of the houses for people concerned.
Also hope you guys check the NOLA.com blog for Orleans parish. Some poor woman on 600 block of Elmira left her cats home, wants someone to let them out of the house so they have half a chance of surviving. We’ll be checking this blog regularly. It’s the only home we have right now.
Many thanks, and we remember that the glorious river is always changing as are our lives. The challenge is to evolve WITH the changes in a positive way. My husband and I are hoping to god that we are up to the challenge.
Again, many thanks!
