The authorities are present on the Point also. Sounds like they’ve spread all around Algiers, now.
I just heard that a SWAT team was patrolling today on the levee in a pick-up. They were observed checking doors to see if they were secured, and they managed to come across a couple of young men down on Patterson who were breaking in.
They didn’t ask them to go away. They apparently arrested them. (I have no idea where they might be able to take people.)
No further word about anyone being told to leave. With any luck at all, things will settle down fast now, and it won’t be an issue.
And before you ask…. No, you can’t go back. Algiers is effectively an island, with a burning flooded city across the river, and what sounds like some serious problems still down the expressway. Can’t get there from here.

I am posting in the hopes that someone who is in Algiers can help me save my 3 stranded cats, who have very limited access to drinking water.
My name is Lon Anderson and my house is on Olivier St. across the street from the Holy Name of Mary School, near the Corner of Eliza St.

I have three cats at my house — one orange tiger-striped (named “Random”), and two brown and black tiger-striped (named “Louis” and “Pushkin”).
We left our cats Saturday August 27th, late at night with about 7 days’ worth of food, and three bowls of water and a gravity-fed waterer. The problem is that one of the cats has a thyroid condition which causes him to drink a lot more water than the others. Aside from this water, the cats do not have acess to any more. Dehydration is our biggest concern. There is a large bag of dog food to which the cats have access, and they will eat that in a pinch.
The oldest brown/black cat (the one with the thyroid condition) may still be wearing a collar and tag (his name is Pushkin)
They like to hide under the beds, on top of kitchen cabinets, behind bathtubs, and if open, inside any closet or kitchen cabinet, but after being left alone this long, they will probably greet any human entering the house with “meow”s.
All three cats are very friendly and social. Calling them in a high-pitch or whistling is usually a good way to attract them.
There are two animal carriers in the utility room behind the kitchen that can be used to transport the animals (one is beige and can accomodate the two brown cats). There are two blue carriers, but one has a door that is not secure and should not be used.

I just heard on WWL radio that there are no National Guardsmen or Police patrolling at night. I also heard from a caller that the police took the firearms from the residents. Is this true? Are you guys left there with no protection, essentially abandoned?

I must ask, on this posting, you mentioned a break in on Patterson; do you happen to know what area of Patterson, i.e., location (between what streets).

I can’t answer the WWL broadcast. I only know what people told me today, about what they saw last night.
About taking away guns – that’s sort of true, but too broad a statement. I gather that if they see someone armed on the street, they are taking away the weapon.

I managed to get back to the Point Monday as the storm was passing to check the house out and to check on my parents who rode the storm out in Harvey. There was a lot of wind damage and downed branches. I live on the 800 block of Pacific and only had some siding damage, a little roof damage, gutter damage, and downed fences. On Tuesday, my wife and I rode our bikes though the Point and saw some downed trees and a lot of downed branches. Overall, our neighborhood looked ok. With a little help from everybody, we can get back to where we were. We didn’t have any flooding! The big red apartment complex on Patterson has significant damage. Somebody’s apartment is missing a wall. There are two of our neighbors who are still sticking it out and I am getting constant updates. If anyone has any questions, please let me know.
Thank you, guys. I have never been more proud to be a resident of Algiers Point! I love that we all stick together to help each other out. This will be very important once we all get back to start repairing. To my dearest guy friends, you know who you are. I love you. If you need anything, I am checking my email(“believe it or not”). We are going to Lafayette for my husband’s job, but will be back ASAP. Love you.

Just wanted to tell our neighbors that we (Al and Olivera) are safe here in Ft. Lauderdale at the moment. I’ve spoken to our next door neighbors yesterday and they said that they were evacuating, but another friend said he saw them hours later still. I sure hope they are safe. I will try to call them again tomorrow and if I reach them, I’ll try to get an update on the area around the 800 block of Pacific.
I love all of you and hope everybody makes it out of this one safe and well. Nothing else really matters and when things calm down we’ll fix what needs to be fixed and then have the biggest blck party ever. ROmi, get some Margaritas ready. Lance, just show up.
