Just had another call from Algiers, and wanted to pass these tidbits along:
First – This person recommends NOT trying to come in. They’ve already had one flat tire today. Trees are down all over the place, and there’s lots of debris in the roads.
They tell me that “most everything is intact”, generally. Yes, as we know, wind and trees and flying whatevers have damaged things, but overall it looks good in the larger Algiers area.
Police are actively guarding the majority of businesses…. and speaking of the police, they are coming in from everywhere! A warm hello and thank you to people from Maricopa County, Arizona!
Aurora Shopping Center is guarded and mostly intact (except for the cell phone store…. those outta be dandy paperweights!)
St. Andrew’s is also intact, with the exception of the walkway covering (amazing).
The police took over Walmart. They control it and are using that as yet another support location.

Spoke to the LA senate/representative info center. They have spoken to Jeff Arnold who advsies you still can’t get in. This person told me that if the driver has a Jeff parish ID, you can get through the check point at the St.Charles Jeff parish line and then proceed into Algiers. This center is in communication with Arnold and I requested as my and your state representative that 70114 and 70131 zip codes be allowed access. As my representative, my expectation is that this be accomplished ASAP. I have also given them this website and encouraged they convey to Jeff Arnold to begin a line of communication here or post info on a web site regarding Algiers.

The number I called was posted on this site 225-342-6945. My rewuest went to Jeff Arnold and I was called back at my son’s house in Baton Rouge within 15 minutes. That encouraging.

I have a question, and maybe this could be a new thread. What means are you guys planning to use to tote your stuff out of Algiers? I checked on UHaul rental and they won’t allow their trucks in a disaster area.
My husband called Jeff Arnold’s office also and received a call back from him. He stated allowing Algiers residents in as Jeff residents were is the Mayor’s call. It is not his decision. However, he is meeting with the Mayor tomorrow and assured us he would bring it up. My husband also mentioned the idea of the zip codes used as confirmation of residency.

One thing to note. Letting Algiers residents in separate from Jefferson westbank residents could be a real blessing to us. Think about it… If only Algiers residents are allowed in, then the traffic will be MUCH lighter!!!
We were in Algiers today to repair roof, empty fridge/freezers, collect papers and clothes.
No problems at all.
Took Highway 1 from Baton Rouge, 3127, 90 to Lapalco.
Impressed with law enforcement, consideration and helpfulness.
1 house had no damage, another had leak in roof.
Business was intact.
A tremendous day!
How did you manage to get in? I.D.???
ID was not enforced.
Plan B was to find 2 Jeff ID’d drivers in the traffic line to help us if needed.
