  1. Thank you for the voice of reason. I live in Zone 1 here in the coast and got trapped in my car at last evcuation b/c of Katy residents evacuating. Run from water, hide from wind. That’s the rule. Don’t trap coastal dwellers from evacuating. I hope everyone listens to you!!

  2. Welcome back – arrived just in time to evacuate, I see πŸ˜‰
Good to hear the voice of reason, once again. I also think I’ll stay put this time – of course, I just moved to a second-story unit in the Museum District, so…

  3. Actually, there might be some danger of flooding out in Cinco. Remember that big hilly thing that borders SH6 and Westheimer? It’s called a “dam”, as in “an earthen structure that is designed to hold back water.” Should the Corps decide to close the gates (in order to keep West Houston from going under water), you might wind up needing a boat to get to the grocery store.
OTOH, it might just turn out that the Corps decided to protect Cinco by letting West Hou flood, instead πŸ˜‰

  4. I’m in Kenner, and will be leaving a little before noon today. I was originally thinking of coming to Houston, but it looks like Gustav is headed a bit more westward – so I’ll probably head up I-55. Things are pretty laid back right now – some businesses open, some closed, but I-10 westbound is already congested, and assisted evacuation has already begun.

  5. EdT — you know as well as I do that the chance of Addicks affecting Cinco is about as likely as our political parties suddenly deciding to focus on issues instead of attacking.
It’s the people like Julie Pippert, commenting above, who really get placed at risk by all the over-hype that goes on.
I do think, though, that there’s a reason people out my way overreact so badly. (I’ve been thinking about this…). The South Katy area is not just new, it’s full of people from elsewhere — generally up north. All they know about hurricanes, often, is what they saw with Katrina, or the horrible bad luck Florida’s had. To them, we’re in the “Gulf Coast Region” — ergo, we’re at risk.
    They don’t differentiate.
What they really need is a lot of information and reassurance.
So listen up neighbors!!! Even if Gustav tracks farther west than is currently projected, do NOT panic and jump in front of people who are at actual risk. Read up on what happened with the Rita evacuations. For that matter, read up about Rita herself. Katy is roughly 150 above sea level. We’re inland. We’re gonna be okay (unless you’re living in a really substandard home).

  6. And a note for Glenn — yes, it looks like heading North is exactly the right answer. You’re probably already on the road — hope it’s a smooth evacuation.

  7. Uh… I was kidding. I thought the last sentence made that clear – guess not.
But, at least the weather folks aren’t calling Gustav “a tornado the size of Georgia”.
You really do need to get an emoticon for “snark” on the blog.

  8. Goldenrod — an ’emoticon’ is a little graphic that depicts an emotion (usually). So, instead of using keyboard characters to underscore laughter, or sadness (or in EdT’s case, “snark”), it would be a little yellow smiley face (or sad face).
