Federal officials now recommend that schools stop closing when a case of swine flu is confirmed at a school, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Tuesday.
The Chronicle adds some detail:
Schools with confirmed or suspected cases of swine flu no longer need to shut down, officials with the Centers for Disease Control said today.
The CDC said last week that schools needed to close for 14 days — sending parents scrambling to find child care and school officials trying to plan for the end of the school year.Richard Besser, acting director of the CDC, said the agency is pulling back its guidelines in part because the disease isn’t as severe as initially thought.
Yes, I know you’re mad that the neighboring school got a week off and you didn’t. Life’s tough sometimes.
Don’t lose hope, though. There’s bound to be another crisis along any minute now.
Remind them that they had this break in mid June, when they are out of school for the summer but the kids whose school had the swine flu freakout are still sitting in class.
Happy thought, ShortWoman. I read somewhere, though, that the schools that closed are getting a ‘pass’ (so to speak) from the state. They won’t have to make the days up.
OTOH, the district sent a memo out last night that the nearby Junior High kids that were out (supposedly til the 11th) have to go back tomorrow (Thursday). So it turns out to only be 3 days.
So those kids are probably feeling ripped off now, too. LOL!
