I have to say this…. it just seems so obvious.
What would happen if the Mexican government amended its constitution to allow foreign investment in its energy industry – with a guaranteed preference for its neighbor to the north? (For those who need help with this, I’m talking about OIL.)
I just have this vision of Bush and Fox coming out of this week’s meetings in Cancun with something like,
“We can solve this oil addiction/immigration problem if we work together on it.”
Kind of wraps the whole thing up into a strange new package, eh?

Not going to happen. They still have a national holiday to commemorate when the oil industry was nationalized. It is very much tied to Mexico’s somewhat slight national self-esteem. It would be something like our selling the Statue of Liberty a Chinese company.

OTOH, they have been royally mucking it up, we need alternative sources for energy, and everybody’s up in arms about the immigration “thing”. I can’t help seeing it as a fascinating solution to a number of issues.
Mexico has 20 states but only about a quarter of our population. How many senators would you give them?
