I’ve read ad nauseum about Obama’s “problem with blue collar Democrats” — the preferred euphemism for bigoted whites who won’t vote for a black person under any circumstances.
Obama’s “problem” has been exploited, analyzed, laughed at, shrugged off, and ultimately avoided as a subject by the candidate himself — even when things have gone to the point of bomb threats.
Bomb threats? Vandalized campaign headquarters? Suggestions that Obama should be lynched?? And we’re just now hearing about this????
Who are these people?
Sadly — they are America’s “heartland”. “Salt of the earth”. “Hard-working white Americans”.
Appalling.
However much people want to say this is Obama’s problem, it’s not. It’s America’s problem. It belongs to all of us.
As a nation, we should be ashamed.
Sadly, you are correct. This kind of nonsense isn’t just found in the right-side of the lunatic fringe. Unfortunately, many folks who would consider themselves hard-working, Christian, blue-collar, left-leaning, patriotic Americans are still susceptible to the malaise.
And, in an era in which our politics is defined to a large extent by media exposure, and in which the media makes sure that the lunatic fringe gets more than its share of coverage (in large part because people love to see train wrecks), does it really surprise us all that much?

Hmm, it will be interesting to see what, if any, response you get to this one. And that presents an interesting question, i.e., what does it say about those who see and don’t respond to either your post, or to the election itself? I have to wonder if the silence of so many doesn’t speak to a far more profound and in many ways, far more dangerous development. I know for my part that it does. And it may signal that regardless of who wins in November, the winner and America will be the loser.
This comment is of a personal nature. It has been my experience over the years that people would rather not talk about issues that matter. Instead, they would rather say, “Hi, how are ya!” or “Hey, how’s it goin’?” It’s painful, sometimes, to really look deep inside oneself. Nevertheless, in my opinion, it MUST be done!
Yeah, I had just read that WP articl which finally brought this into the open. I had been saying all along that Hillary was getting a lot of support from those older conservative racist Democrats. I knew because I kept running into them and I even have some as relatives. I don’t think there is much you can do about it. Changing long held beliefs takes a lot of work and time. Sometimes people will hurt themselves rather than admit they have been wrong for a long time.
I wouldn’t vote for Obama because I don’t trust him. That doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t vote for another person of African descent. For example, I would have no problem with Condi Rice.
So, what about the 95% of black voters who check the Obama box? It’s obvious that they are voting for him solely because he has dark skin. Or don’t you feel comfortable discussing that isue.

Your question is a valid one, I think (though you really didn’t need to attack to get a response — this is a pretty laid back, and very moderate, blog).
The short answer about the heavily skewed black vote is that I don’t know that the voting result is any different in terms of data, but I don’t think the rationale is the same.
The longer answer requires a post of its own, I think. I’ll post something here in a few…
