Santa brought this cool little “Backwards Bush” days-left-in-office counter over two years ago. At the time, it registered well over 700 days left to go, and it seemed impossibly far away.
It’s been steadily counting down the days, hours, and minutes until George W. Bush would leave office, but a few weeks ago it started to die. The numbers progressively faded until they were nearly impossible to read, and two days ago, it gave up altogether.
We made it.
Our reputation is tattered, our economy’s in a tailspin, and our infrastructure is crumbling, but in spite of all our troubles, we’re emerging from this very dark time in our history.
Today, we start anew.
I have no doubt that Barack Obama’s administration will have any number of problems. He’ll make decisions that folks won’t agree with, and the doom-sayers will predict the end of the United States at every turn.
But not today.
Today is a day of hope; a fresh start and a new face to the world; a day of celebration. I’m very, very proud to be an American today.
Happy Inauguration Day, everyone!
