Santa brought me a new lens for Christmas. It’s a Nikkor 300mm f/2.8, and it’s an intimidating monster — so much so that it was at least two weeks before I’d even attach it to the camera!
But when I finally got up the nerve to use it, I was absolutely stunned by the quality of images it produces: sharp!
So — now I’m bitten (again) by the “go shoot critters” bug… and it turns out that as awesome as this lens is, it hasn’t got nearly enough “reach” for skittish wildlife. The awesome hawk above was sitting no more than 30 feet or so from me — hardly a common distance. Everything else is still as far away as ever.
There’s a solution, though.
This very cool (imho) shot of AC was taken with a Tamron SP AF 1.4x teleconverter attached to the big Nikkor. Essentially, it magnifies my lens’s reach 1.4 times, making this a 420mm shot.
This is gonna be fun! I’m off to shoot birds tomorrow morning…
So, can we look forward to seeing you at PhotoCampHouston this Saturday?

BTW, those were all cool shots.

Hi there EdT!
Nope — won’t be there, I’m sorry to say. We’re off to College Station for a volleyball tourney!
